Mandatory 10-digit dialing within 507 area code to start July 30

Posted: July 26, 2024

Beginning Tuesday, July 30, residents and businesses in the 507 area code region will need to dial 10 digits – the area code plus the seven-digit phone number – for all calls, even local ones. This change is necessary to accommodate growing phone number demand in southern Minnesota. A new area code, 924, will be introduced alongside the existing 507.

The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission is implementing this change to ensure continued phone number availability. Existing phone numbers will remain unchanged, but new lines or additional lines requested after Aug. 30 may be assigned the 924 area code.

It is important to note that your current phone number will not change, and the cost of calls, coverage area, and other rates will remain the same. Emergency numbers like 911, 311, and 711 will continue to work with three-digit dialing. However, some older devices like fax machines or security systems may require reprogramming to accommodate 10-digit dialing.

The 507 area code is projected to exhaust available numbers in early 2025. The Commission is working to ensure a smooth transition for all residents and businesses.
